DIGITAL DESIGN M3
QUEEN VICTORIA GARDENS PAVILION

ISO.PNG

For the Queen Victoria Gardens Pavilion, I followed through with concepts previously explored in M2. Keeping the angular geometry which builds around a central open space, I created a usable pavilion that responds to the program through opening both sides of the pavilion, inviting circulation. I have adjusted the landscape to make it comfortable for seating, as well as scattering monolithic components from the pavilion across the space. The pavilion was created by using the scholastic aggregation component in Grasshopper, which I utilised by building mesh constraints of my previous geometry, allowing this new pavilion to follow the same overall shape as the M2 project.

CIRCULATION

The pavilion promotes circulation throughout the curved form of the landscape, where people are gravitated towards the central low point of the pavilion. The pavilion itself has a barrier through the centre which can be used as seating and therefore is a significant part of the circulation flow around the cite. However, although both sides of the pavilion can be used simultaneously, it is unlikely for people to walk right through the pavilion, therefore leading to several differing circulation paths around the pavilion.

THRESHOLD

The several thresholds of the pavilion directly influence how the space is used in terms of circulation and time spent in each area. The primary threshold is the outer walls of the pavilion, followed by the barrier that extends through the centre of the pavilion and is used as seating. The landscape and scattered elements surrounding the pavilion act as a light threshold, where they change atmosphere depending on the event at the pavilion and separate space from the larger gardens to the smaller, more refined pavilion landscape.
